Peri-Implantitis Threatens Dental Implant Health
Peri-implantitis is a serious condition involving the gum and bone surrounding implants. The early stage is known as peri-mucositis, and affects the gum tissues around an implant. When the condition progresses and impacts the bone supporting the implant, peri-implantitis has developed. Peri-implantitis is caused by factors like poor oral hygiene, active gum disease, diabetes and smoking. Excess dental cement used to hold crowns and bite misalignment can also contribute to the early onset of peri-implantitis.
When Peri-Implantitis Threatens the Health of Your Implants
Symptoms of peri-implantitis include:
- Red or inflamed gums
- Deep pocketing
- Implant mobility
- Exposed metal threads
How We Treat Peri-Implantitis
Drs. Marvin Price and Kenneth Gewant use both non-surgical and surgical techniques for peri-implantitis care. We also offer a minimally invasive method of treating this condition known as the REPaiR™ laser protocol.
Non-Surgical Peri-Implantitis Treatment
Our non-surgical approach involves removal of irritants from around the dental implant, like bacteria and tartar buildup. We may also use anti-microbial solutions to disinfect the site and local or systemic antibiotics to control the infection.
Surgical Peri-Implantitis Treatment
For advanced cases, surgical removal of infected tissue may be required to restore health. Guided tissue regeneration may also be used to encourage regrowth of gum and bone tissues.
Laser Peri-Implantitis Treatment
As a certified BIOLASE® laser dentist, Dr. Price gently eradicates infected tissue and bacteria surrounding the implant with a minimally invasive laser. Healthy tissue is left untouched, and can begin the process of reattaching to the implant surface.
